Over the years, Sierra has been recognized repeatedly for excellence in design by Folio magazine's Ozzie Awards. In addition, Sierra has received one or more Maggie Awards from the Western Publications Association almost every year since 2000 for:

    "Photography of Hope," Best Black-and-White or Two-Color Editorial Layout (Trade & Consumer); Best Series of Editorial Photographs (Consumer)
  • September/October 2005:
    "American Idylls," Best Public Service Series or Article
  • March/April 2004:
    "Wild America," Best Special Theme Issue
  • January/February 2002:
    "Ode to the Bus," Best Signed Editorial or Essay
  • September/October 2002:
    "Election 2002," Best Public Service Series or Article
  • May/June 2000:
    "The Legacy of Lewis & Clark," Best Public Service Series or Article

    "Night Ride," Best Single Editorial Illustration

Other Sierra awards include:

  • March/April 2006: First prize in Canada's Northern Lights Awards for "A Real Refuge," by Edward Readicker Henderson
  • September/October 2005: Best profile award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors for "Madame Butterfly," by Michelle Nijhuis
